Nvidia Has Reportedly Stopped Making the RTX 5090. Here's What That Means

A leaked factory notice says Nvidia will stop supplying chips for the RTX 5090 and send them to pricier pro cards instead. An RTX 5080 24GB would become the top GeForce. In India, the few listings left start near ₹2.7 lakh.

The short version

  • A leaked factory notice says Nvidia will no longer make any RTX 5090 models. The GB202 chip inside it would go only to workstation and data centre cards.
  • An RTX 5080 24GB would reportedly take over as the top GeForce card, and the 16GB RTX 5080 would be dropped.
  • Unconfirmed. Nvidia hasn't commented, and it rarely does on rumours.
  • Existing stock should last a while. In India, the listings tracked by GetPC start near ₹2.7 lakh, and most are out of stock. The US launch price was $1,999.

Where this came from

The claim comes from two leakers on X. One, hongxing2020, shared what they describe as a notice from a factory that builds the cards. The other, MEGAsizeGPU, backed it up, saying no more GB202 chips would go to the RTX 5090. Tom's Hardware and Notebookcheck both reported it on October 10 and both call it unverified. Nobody has shown the document itself.

So treat it as a rumour, not a fact. It's specific, and two sources line up, but it's still second-hand.

Why Nvidia would do it

Tom's Hardware's answer is money. The same GB202 chip sells for far more inside a pro card. Tom's Hardware points out that the RTX Pro 5500 has the same 21,760 CUDA cores as the RTX 5090 but 84GB of memory instead of 32GB. An RTX 6000 Pro can sell for around $15,000.

It's the same pressure behind this year's RAM prices. AI hardware pays better, so it gets the chips first. Our DDR4 vs DDR5 explainer covers how that hit memory.

What it means for gamers

On paper, very little changes if you weren't buying a 5090 anyway. It was already selling well above launch price, and Notebookcheck puts US street prices around $5,000. Once retailer stock runs out, those prices are likely to climb.

The more interesting part is the RTX 5080 24GB. Tom's Hardware links it to the RTX 5080 Super, a refresh that was reportedly delayed by memory shortages. If this report is right, it would become Nvidia's best gaming card. The next generation, RTX 60, isn't expected until late 2027 or 2028.

What to watch: an official word from Nvidia, and whether an RTX 5080 24GB gets announced.
