The short version

  • The OnePlus 16 launched in China on October 12 with the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.
  • The big upgrades: a 9,000mAh battery, a 200MP main camera and a screen that goes up to 185Hz.
  • It starts at CNY 5,999 (about ₹86,000) for 12GB + 256GB, which is a big jump over the OnePlus 15.
  • OnePlus hasn't confirmed an India launch. Leaks say the cheaper OnePlus 16R is the likelier phone for India.

What's new

The headline is the battery. At 9,000mAh, it's a lot bigger than the OnePlus 15's 7,300mAh, in a phone that weighs about 220g and is 8.5mm thick. Charging is 100W wired and 50W wireless. That's actually a step down from the 15's 120W, but OnePlus says it still hits 80% in 37 minutes.

The 6.78-inch LTPO OLED screen runs at up to 165Hz in everyday use and only goes to 185Hz in supported games. On the back you get a 200MP main camera, a 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP 3x telephoto. The selfie camera is 50MP too. Video tops out at 8K 30fps.

You also get IP68 and IP69 water and dust resistance, an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, Wi-Fi 7 and ColorOS 17. It comes in three colours: Starlight, Dark Forest and Martian Masterpiece.

Price in China, and what that means in rupees

Here are the list prices, with rough rupee conversions. These are conversions, not Indian prices:

  • 12GB + 256GB: CNY 5,999 (about ₹86,000)
  • 12GB + 512GB: CNY 6,799 (about ₹97,000)
  • 16GB + 512GB: CNY 7,499 (about ₹1.07 lakh)
  • 16GB + 1TB: CNY 8,499 (about ₹1.22 lakh)

Launch offers in China take CNY 300 off each model, so the base model's first-sale price is CNY 5,699, and that offer runs until November 13. For context, the OnePlus 15 started at CNY 3,999 in China and ₹72,999 in India.

Is it coming to India?

Not officially, yet. OnePlus hasn't announced a global launch, and Android Authority reports it won't come to Europe or North America. Tipsters say a OnePlus 16R is very likely for India around December or January, at roughly ₹70,000 to ₹75,000. If the full OnePlus 16 does come, Indian outlets expect it to cost more than ₹1 lakh.

Our take

On paper, the battery alone makes this one of the more interesting phones of the year. But 9,000mAh isn't special at OnePlus anymore. The OnePlus Nord 6 already packs a 9,000mAh battery and a very capable Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 for ₹38,999 in India. It's nowhere near the 8 Elite Extreme, but it's plenty for most people.

OnePlus also ended its Hasselblad camera partnership in 2025, swapping it for its own DetailMax Engine, and its flagships now lean hard into gaming performance. If that isn't what you want from a phone, I'd look at other brands. At this price, OnePlus just isn't the value-for-money pick it used to be.

The next thing to watch is whether OnePlus brings the full 16 to India or only the 16R.
