The short version
- BioWare is closing. The studio confirmed it on October 21, about 31 years after it was founded in Edmonton.
- The next Mass Effect is cancelled. About 50 BioWare staff were working on it, per Bloomberg.
- Bloomberg reports roughly 400 layoffs across EA, about 3% of its workforce, plus the cancellation of a Sims project codenamed Lotus.
- The cuts come two months after EA's $55 billion buyout by a group led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund closed.
What happened
BioWare announced the closure in a post on X, writing that there was "nothing easy" about the news and that its focus was on its team. No closing date was given.
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported the wider picture. Around 400 people are losing their jobs across EA. A staff letter from chief operating officer David Tinson and chief studios officer Cam Weber, reported by Game Developer, talked about making "deliberate choices" across EA's portfolio.

According to Bloomberg:
- The Sims Project Lotus is cancelled.
- A project called Evergreen gets priority.
- skate. keeps going with fewer resources.
- Respawn and DICE are said to be working together on a new game that's "likely" a Star Wars Battlefront sequel. That part is unconfirmed.
Why it's happening now
EA was taken private in a deal worth about $55 billion (around ₹5.2 lakh crore converted), led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund with Silver Lake and Affinity Partners. It closed in August 2026, and it loaded EA with roughly $18 billion of debt (about ₹1.7 lakh crore).
Debt that size has to be serviced, and studios with long, expensive development cycles and uneven recent sales are the obvious targets. That's an inference from the timing and the numbers, not something EA has said. But BioWare fits the profile: a big team, a long gap between releases, and two of its last three games falling short of EA's expectations.
Thirty years of BioWare

Doctors Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip founded BioWare in 1995. Within a decade it had made Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the games that defined the Western RPG for a generation.
EA bought the studio in 2007, the year Mass Effect came out. The next stretch was its peak: Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 2 and 3, and Dragon Age: Inquisition, which won Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2014.
Then came the slide. Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017) was criticised for its animation and story. Anthem (2019), a live-service shooter, sold around 5 million copies but lost players fast, and its servers were later shut down. Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024) spent years in development and, by EA's own account, didn't meet sales expectations.
The next Mass Effect had been teased since 2020, with a short trailer showing an N7 armoured figure. It now joins the long list of games that were announced and never made.

What about the games you already own?
Nothing has changed for owners yet. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is still on sale on Steam, the EA app, PlayStation and Xbox. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is still sold too.
Single-player games normally keep working after a studio closes, because the publisher, not the studio, runs the storefront and licensing. Star Wars: The Old Republic is run by another studio, Broadsword, so it shouldn't be affected by BioWare's closure. Our explainer on delisted games vs servers shutting down covers what usually happens next.
What to watch: a closing date, any word on who keeps the Mass Effect and Dragon Age names, and whether EA confirms the Battlefront report.
