The short version

  • Thief: The Dark Project Remastered launches on December 3, 2026. It's made by Nightdive Studios and published by Atari.
  • On Steam in India it costs ₹1,349 ($29.99). The Digital Deluxe bundle is ₹1,810 ($34.97). Pre-orders are open.
  • It runs at up to 4K and 120fps, adds a weapon and item wheel, gyro aiming and custom campaign support, and includes all of Thief: Gold.
  • It also comes with The Tarnished Mirror, an all-new four-mission campaign from the creators of the fan-made The Black Parade mod.

A stealth classic returns

The original Thief: The Dark Project came out in 1998, made by Looking Glass Studios. You play Garrett, a master thief in a dark, half-medieval city, and the game is built around hiding in shadows and listening for footsteps rather than fighting. Its developers called it a "first-person sneaker", and it shaped stealth games from Dishonored to Hitman.

The remaster was first detailed on November 2 with a release date and pre-orders. Gematsu's report names Nightdive Studios and Eidos-Montréal as developers, while the Steam page credits Nightdive and the original Looking Glass Studios. Nightdive is the studio behind remasters of System Shock, Quake and Star Wars: Dark Forces, so it has a long record with 1990s PC games.

What's new in the remaster

The game runs on Nightdive's own KEX Engine. According to the official listings, it includes:

  • Up to 4K resolution and 120fps.
  • Improved textures, models and animations.
  • All 12 missions of the original, plus the Thief: Gold update, which added three missions and five new enemy types.
  • A new weapon and item wheel for controllers, plus rumble and motion (gyro) controls.
  • A mission selector, so you can jump back into any level.
  • Built-in support for custom campaigns. Thief has one of the oldest fan-mission communities in PC gaming, and this gives easy access to thousands of hours of player-made levels.
  • Small fixes to the original level design.
  • A Vault of behind-the-scenes material.
  • Trophies and achievements.

The Tarnished Mirror: a new campaign

The bigger surprise is on the Steam page. The remaster includes a story expansion called The Tarnished Mirror, a brand-new four-mission campaign set after the events of the original game.

It comes from the creators of The Black Parade, a large fan-made Thief campaign that's widely regarded as one of the best fan mods the series has had. Bringing that team in to write official new missions is a nice nod to the community that kept Thief alive for over 25 years.

What to watch

The game launches on December 3. Watch for PlayStation Store and Xbox prices in India closer to launch, as only Steam's INR price is listed so far. If you've never played a Thief game, this is the one that started it all, and the Tarnished Mirror campaign means even long-time fans will have something new to sneak through.
