The short version
- God of War Laufey now launches on May 20, 2027 on PS5. It was due on February 16, 2027, so that's a delay of about three months.
- Santa Monica Studio announced it on November 4, saying the team needs more time for "finishing touches."
- In India, pre-orders on the PlayStation Store cost ₹4,999 for the Standard Edition and ₹5,599 for the Digital Deluxe Edition ($69.99 and $79.99 in the US).
- The game stars Faye, Kratos's late wife and Atreus's mother. It's the first mainline God of War where you don't play as Kratos.
What Santa Monica Studio said
The news came in a short statement on the studio's X account, signed on behalf of the whole team rather than by one named person. The studio says it wants more time to polish the game and get it to its "fullest potential," and that the extra months are going into finishing touches rather than big changes.
It also thanked players for the response since the June reveal and promised more news "soon." There's no new trailer or gameplay with the delay, and no word on whether the extra time changes anything about the game's content.

A quick timeline
The game has moved fast since it was announced. Sony revealed it at State of Play on June 2, 2026. The February 16 date followed at San Diego Comic-Con in July, and pre-orders opened on September 29, the same week Sony showed Faye's new weapon, the Serpent Bow.
That makes this a fairly late delay. Pre-orders had been open for five weeks, and the PlayStation Store page in India still showed February 16 when we checked on November 5. Expect the store listings to catch up over the next few days.
What happens to pre-orders
Santa Monica Studio's statement doesn't mention pre-orders, and Sony hasn't said anything specific. Normally a digital pre-order on the PlayStation Store simply moves to the new date, and the game will still download on launch day. If you'd rather not wait, PlayStation Store purchases of pre-ordered content can usually be cancelled for a refund before the game releases.
Here's what each edition includes:
| Edition | India price | US price | What's in it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | ₹4,999 | $69.99 | The game, plus the pre-order bonus |
| Digital Deluxe | ₹5,599 | $79.99 | The game, Dark Alchemy armour, blade, bow scales and catalyst, a resource pack, digital artbook and soundtrack |
| Deluxe upgrade | ₹600 | $10 | The Deluxe extras, for Standard owners |
Every pre-order gets the Last Wish armour set, a golden-leaves cosmetic for Faye's companion Phranque, and an in-game resource pack. One detail worth knowing before buying a box copy: the physical Standard Edition comes with a download code, not a disc.
The Collector Box
Sony is also selling a God of War Laufey Collector Box for $149.99, direct from PlayStation in limited numbers. It has an 8-inch light-up statue of Faye, a 51-card Oracle deck and a mini artbook. The game isn't included. Sony's last update gave it the February 16 date, and it hasn't said whether the box will now ship in May too. It also isn't listed for India.

What the game is about
Laufey takes place after Faye's death and before the events of 2018's God of War. She wakes up in the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods from different mythologies fight for power, and finds that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are falling apart.
She isn't alone. Rue is a living set of enchanted ribbons that guards Faye's sword, and Phranque is a talking cosmic cube. Deborah Ann Woll voices Faye, Jack Quaid plays Phranque, Perlina Lau plays Rue, and Chris Judge returns as Kratos. Ariel Lawrence is the game director, with Cory Barlog listed as the studio's head of creative.
Why May might be the smarter date
Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on November 19, and a lot of publishers moved their games out of its way and into early 2027. That left February badly crowded. Wccftech described the move as getting Laufey out of a congested window, and that matches how the calendar looks.
On paper, May gives Santa Monica Studio more room, both for polish and for attention.
